Jim Harbaugh Just Gave Away the Chargers’ Last Chance at 0-5

Jim Harbaugh stood in front of the cameras and said he could not remember a time he had been madder at himself. He was right. Leading 17-10 with 10:33 left, fourth-and-1 from his own 41, he kept the offense on the field. Justin Herbert got stuffed on the sneak. The Broncos took over on a short field, scored 13 unanswered points, and left SoFi with a 23-17 win. The Chargers are 0-5 for the first time since 2003.

Harbaugh called it the wrong decision. He said he should have called timeout when he saw the Broncos gap down and punted. He took 100 percent of the blame and said the momentum was in his team’s favor until he turned it. ESPN Analytics had the win probability slightly higher if they went for it, but analytics do not play the game. A stuffed sneak from your own 41 against a division rival when you are already 0-4 is not a calculated risk. It is a coach who has spent five weeks watching the same problems and still chose the play that made them worse. He also burned both challenges earlier in the game on low-percentage spots, so when the officials missed a first-down marker later he had nothing left. That is game management, not bad luck.

Herbert’s day matched the record. In his 100th career game he went 14-of-24 for 121 yards, one touchdown, one interception, and a lost fumble. He was sacked five times. On the final four possessions he was stopped on fourth down, fumbled, threw a pick, and got sacked to end it. Season numbers: 937 yards, five touchdowns, seven interceptions, a 70.2 rating, and a PFF grade that ranks him last among qualified quarterbacks. He has a turnover in five straight games. Dating to last year he has gone seven straight with at least as many interceptions as touchdowns. The line started four rookies. Ladd McConkey was out. The skill room is thin. None of that excuses a quarterback who keeps putting the ball on the ground and into the other team’s hands when the game is still there.

Mike McDaniel should have been gone three weeks ago. He was brought in to fix the offense and make it look like the version of Miami that could move the ball without turning it over every drive. Through five weeks the Chargers rank near the bottom of the league in points and passing yards, Herbert is last in the grading systems, and the fourth-down decisions keep coming from a staff that cannot protect the quarterback or finish a drive. The coordinator is the first person who should have been fired when the record hit 0-3. Instead the building kept the same play sheet and the same quarterback looking for the same page. That is how you get to 0-5 with a head coach admitting he made the call that flipped the last game.

Harbaugh is not safe because he owns the mistake. He is the one who keeps making the decisions that put Herbert in those spots. The next game is in Kansas City. If the same fourth-down math and the same turnovers show up against the Chiefs, the conversation stops being about one bad call and starts being about whether the entire offensive staff, including the coordinator who should already be packing, still has a job. The Chargers are not close. They are 0-5 because the people in charge of the ball keep giving it away.
