The Arizona Cardinals have a storied history when it comes to their quarterbacks. From Hall of Famers to Super Bowl MVPs, the Cardinals have had some of the NFL’s greatest signal callers. In this article, we’ll take a look at the top three quarterbacks in Arizona Cardinals history and why they are considered the best.
The Arizona Cardinals
Kurt Warner is arguably the Cardinals’ greatest quarterback of all time and for a good reason. Warner revived his career in Arizona after a stint with the St. Louis Rams. He led the Cardinals to their first-ever Super Bowl appearance in 2009, where he threw for 377 yards and three touchdowns.
That Super Bowl in my opinion is arguably the greatest Super Bowl in history, The Cardinals lost against Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Warner set several franchise records, including most touchdown passes in a single season (30) and passing yards in a Super Bowl (377). He also became the only quarterback in NFL history to throw for more than 400 yards in a playoff game twice.
Neil Lomax was the Cardinals’ quarterback for eight seasons, from 1981-1988. He is regarded as one of the best quarterbacks in franchise history and helped lead the team to two division titles in 1983 and 1984. Lomax was selected to the Pro Bowl twice in his career and set several franchise records, including most career touchdown passes (136) and most passing yards in a single game (468 yards in 1984).
In addition, he holds the record for most career 300-yard passing games with 19. Lomax’s contributions to the Cardinals’ success in the 1980s make him one of the franchise’s most beloved quarterbacks.
Charley Johnson played quarterback for the Cardinals during the 1960s and remains the franchise’s all-time leader in passing yards (34, 639). During his tenure with the Cardinals, Johnson led the team to its first-ever playoff appearance in 1964. That season, he threw for 3,045 yards and 28 touchdowns.
Moreover, Johnson was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1963 and 1964, and he held several team records until they were broken by Lomax and Warner. Johnson’s impact on the Cardinals’ success in the 1960s merits him a spot in the top three quarterbacks in the Cardinals’ history.
Although there have been other great quarterbacks to play for the Cardinals, Kurt Warner, Neil Lomax, and Charley Johnson stand out as the top three. Their records, accomplishments, and contributions to the franchise make them legends in Arizona Cardinals history. These quarterbacks have left a lasting impact on the Cardinals and their fans, and they will be remembered as some of the best to ever play the game.
